Gorm Ile is the perfect location for exploring Islay. We stayed 3 nights and we could not have found a better place to stay. The house was perfect and had all the comforts of home. The location was also perfect, very close to the ferry and downtown restaurants and stores. The price was unbelievable, we paid half of what we would have if we stayed at a hotel. Alan and Alison were wonderful hosts and Alan gave us a private, behind the scenes, very informative tour of Laphroiag, which was one of the highlights of our time on Islay. This place is a hidden gem and I highly recommend Gorm Ile.

“Gorm Ile” is an excellent accommodation in Port Ellen, and Alan and Alison are excellent hosts. My wife says the place was immaculate when we arrived, and I concur. And it had all the comforts necessary for my son, his wife, my wife and I to enjoy a fabulous week on Islay. We explored all the distilleries, and Alan’s after-hours tour of Laphroig was the highlight of our stay. Gorm Ile is ideally positioned on the island, located just steps from the beach, the Coop, and Port Ellen restaurants. I’m happy to talk about our visit, so anyone considering Gorm Ile is free to call me in California (925-418-4428). Thanks, Alan and Alison, for making our Scotland tour so memorable. –Bryan Scott, Brentwood, California

Another excellent stay in Gorm Ile this October, on a return visit to the property. It's a comfortable, homely house with all the mod cons for an enjoyable holiday. Location is very convenient, especially for visiting the three distilleries by cycling/walking along the newly-improved path. Also a very relaxing, quiet location for unwinding after a day out and about on Islay, only a minute's walk from the beach, where you can stroll around the picturesque bay. Co-op is just around the corner, supplying all the essentials for self-catering, and there's the hotel, bistro and cyber cafe within five minutes' walk if you don't feel like cooking.

If you're reading this review, let me tell you that you want to stay at Gorm Ile. My husband and I stayed at Gorm Ile for a week during our honeymoon in August, and from the moment we arrived we were in love with the property. Alan and Allison met us at the house after we arrived on the 8pm ferry and took an hour out of their evening to welcome us to the island, tell us about the house and point out good walking trips around the island. They were so welcoming! There is a shop a block away and the kitchen is fully stocked in case you want to cook your own meals (which we did most nights). There are also a couple of restaurants within walking distance of the property as well. And you are very close to the Three Distilleries Pathway, so you can walk to three distilleries! Gorm Ile and Port Ellen are perfectly situated to enjoy the island. And we ended up renting bikes to get around for a couple of the day. The added bonus is that Alan gave us a private tour of Laphroaig, which was by far our favorite part of the trip. Though we would've stayed at this property regardless. Stay at Gorm Ile, you won't regret it! My husband and I are already talking about our next trip to Islay and are planning to stay there again - and we've recommended it to all our friends who are talking about taking a journey over there!

Fantastic location, just minutes from the local pub where we had a warm welcome every day. We arrived just after 8pm and Alan and Alison were waiting for us. The house is comfortable and well equipped. Alan and Alison are great hosts, on hand if we needed them. Alan took us on an amazing private tour of the Laphroaig distillery, his knowledge of the process is priceless. Port Ellen is definitely the place to stay on Islay and Gorm Ile is the ideal place to stay whilst you're there.

great house in a great location. Spotlessly clean and incredibly well equipped kitchen, all this at a great price on a beautiful Island. What more could you ask for?

Stayed at week on islay at the Gorm ile . The week was so nice and relaxing and the accommodation very well equiped. Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Alan and Alison were perfect hosts and very friendly and made us feel at home. The tour Alan gave myself and partner was outstanding and knew exactly what he was talking about ( 35yr working at laphroaig distillery ). Would definitely recommend other tourists to stay at Gorm Ile

Recently spent a week at Gorm Ile. Very well equipped, close to the shops and harbour, within comfortable walking distance of the three southernmost distilleries. Alison and Alan were the most amazing hosts. Alan's tour of the Laphroaig distillery set the stage for an unforgettable island experience. Well worth a visit.

We stayed in Gorm Ile for a week and had a great time on the island. The weather wasn't too bright, but that made our visit to all the distilleries possible. The highlight was the tour Alan gave us throughout Laphroaig, the place where he has been working for 35 years now. He really makes the place come to life, proudly explaining the details of the whisky making. We very much enjoyed this personal touch to our favourite whisky. Alan and Alison's hospitality were a great extra to the house, which was very convenient and cosy, close to shops and harbour. Both the house and the island can be warmly recommended.

We are just back from a fantastic week on Islay staying at Gorm Ile. The house is lovely and has everything you need for a comfortable stay including washing machine and a range of TV channels. It is perfect for travellers without a car as it is only a few minutes from the ferry and bus stops if you fancy seeing more of the island. The beach is only two minutes away as is the local shops. Alan And Allison are so welcoming and helpful and we really enjoyed Alan's tour of the distillery...my husband a wee bit too much!

Recently returned from a very enjoyable stay at Gorm Ile. The house is very well equipped, with a cosy atmosphere, and we immediately felt at home. The location of the house is very convenient, with Co-Op supermarket just around the corner, and the post office, general store and two bars within five minutes walk. There is a beautiful sandy beach with a gorgeous view of the picturesque bay just two minutes walk from the house - perfect for early morning strolls. We came to Islay without a car and found the location brilliant for exploring the distilleries. Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are all within walking distance (Laphroaig 20 minutes away, and Ardbeg an hours' walk), and most of the other distilleries on the island can be visited by bus from Port Ellen. Alan and Alison were very friendly and welcoming, and a highlight of our trip was Alan's special behind the scenes tour of the Laphroaig distillery, where he has worked for many years. We would definitely stay at Gorm Ile again, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to our friends.

Handy for local Supermarket and lovely beaches The location is ideal for distillery visits, a must for friends of Laphroaig, 20 minute walk to the distillery. Everything the previous guests said about this accommodation is completely true. This is a perfect base to explore Islay from. Alan and Alison are kind and helpful people, and the Laphroaig tour is really special. Extra recommendations: do the RSPB walk on The Oa (spectacular) and try the fish & chips at the Cyber Cafe next door!

We had a very happy, comfortable stay in Gorm Ile. As others have said, it is immaculate and we felt instantly at home. The house had all the facilities we could possibly want, fridge, washing machine, microwave, freezer etc. A real bonus is that the local Co Op store which is well stocked and open long hours, is just around the corner, so running out of milk was never an issue! Alan and Alison were always on hand to help, tell us about the island and about the places to visit. Alan's personalised Laphroaig distillery tour is not to be missed even if like me, you don't like whisky. It's fascinating and great fun too. Gorm Ile is literally a stone throw from a fabulous silver sand beach and close to the ferry which is very handy if catching the early boat. If planning a trip to Islay, I'd have no hesitation in recommending Gorm Ile.

The very friendly owners of this well-kept house in downtown Port Ellen made sure everything was perfect for our stay. It is well-furnitured, beds are good and it has a sufficiently equipped kitchen to do basic dinner cooking. There's a small garden which is conveniently close to the WiFi network of the nearby Cyber Caf. For the price we could not have asked for more, and it was one of the reasons our trip to Islay was a success.

We had a wonderful stay in Islay, Gorm Ile was everything we expected and more. Alan and Alison were very helpful and told us everything we needed to know about the local area and attractions. The accommodation itself was clean, easily accessible and close to all transport links. We will definitely visit again! p.s. Thanks for the tour

Simply perfect! We stayed there this August and greatly enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of landlord and landlady, as well as the house itself, a cozy place where we felt at home the minute we arrived. All the equipment we might possibly need was there (great asset: the washing machine), beds were neither too soft nor too hard. Received the "treat of the house"-Laphroaig tour with Alan, thank you for that! Only shortfall: the house is already booked for Whisky week 2014 and 2015 - that tells it all!

This is the ideal starting point for Islay and distillery tours. Ideally suited for two; we enjoyed our stay there very much, the cottage has everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay (indeed the place is cosier than the photos display it). As the weather played along as well this was a fantastic holiday week. Alan showed us around at Laphroaig- an additional bonus! We can really recommend Gorm Ile!

Just returned from a wonderful stay at Gorm Ile. Perfect house for us (Family of 4) ; Clean, comfortable, extremely well equipped and ideally located in Port Ellen for easy access to the distilleries, beach, walks and amenities. Just a few minutes from the Ferry port. Very quiet peaceful location. Alan and Alison were there to greet us when we arrived and made us feel very welcome. Can't wait to return to this beautiful Island.

I recently stayed at Gorm Ile on our holiday to Islay and have to say the house was fantastic. It was a home from home. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Islay or Port Ellen to stay here. It is ideally located for visiting the local distilleries and is just a two minute walk to the beach where you can witness some beautiful sunsets. I would just like to thank Alan and Alison for their fantastic and generous hospitality provided to us on our trip to Islay. We will definitely be back again soon! Slainthe!

Lovely house (pictures don't do the house justice). Beds were very comfortable, spotlessly clean. Kitchen has everything you could possibly need. Lots of clean towels, extra bedding. Owners even got a travel cot for us as we were bringing our friends toddler. Perfect location. We had a lovely time and will be back. Highly recommended!
